THE THIN VASCULAR HAEMANGIOMAS OF
FOREHEAD AND BACK OF THE NECK:
Angel Kisses and Stork Bites
These lesions are usually in the middle of the forehead, sometimes in the space
between the eyes and may extend to the back of the nose. The middle of these
lesions are pale and the rim of the lesion is more prominent that they look like a
stain of a lipstick so called angel kiss. The ones located at the back of the neck were
named as stork bite attributed to the tale of babies who were carried from back of
their neck and brought by the storks. These stains never became swollen from the
skin surface, they do not need treatment. They usually disappear until the age 4 to
5 years; but may become prominent in advanced ages with anger or other stressful
conditions. Sometimes a comic phrase may be told among the folk about these pe-
ople in anger such as ‘he is so angry that his lamp is on.
The lesions in his forehead, nose and back part of neck were all present at birth.
The ones in the anterior part of the neck and thigh were appeared after a week
later. The one in the anterior part of the neck reached to 5 cm; became swollen and red.
Plastic surgeons followed the patient. Propranolol was recommended from a university
hospital in İstanbul, but they did not want to start treatment because of lack of confiden-
ce. In the first three months, after the treatment started, the lesions regressed.
