BLEEDING IN HAEMANGIOMAS

The parents usually say that they are warned for serious, life threa-

tening bleeding from haemangiomas by the local doctors before they

have been sent to us. This is not a real statement. First of all, 99% of

haemangiomas does not bleed spontaneously. If there is trauma, they

usually bleed inside of the lesion and become swollen suddenly. But

they may bleed seriously if there is a penetrating trauma with a sharp

object. If so, pressure should be applied on the lesion with a gause or

clean piece of cloth about 5 minutes without removing it is essential.

Bleeding will generally stops with this maneuver.

Some special haemangiomas have tendency to bleed. These are about

1% of all haemangiomas.

The baby had a small redness on his upper lip and around the eye. In

time, these lesions progressed and become swollen. Bleeding occurred

from the nose.

The patient had a big haemangioma in his eye lid, forehead, nose when he

admitted at 6 months of age. He had bleeding from the part in the nose.
