NEWTREATMENT INHAEMANGIOMAS
Nowadays, treatment approach in haemangiomas has been radi-
cally changed. Incidentally, a drug which was used for 40 years for
hypertension, with very well-known but no permanent side ef-
fects had a prominent effect on growing haemangiomas especial-
ly in small infants. At the beginning, only case reports with good
results were published but then a study was planned in fifty cases
in France. The results were so good that the study was stopped
at 32 cases and the results were published at the end of 2009.
Our first case in Baskent University was a giant and lethal liver
haemangioma which we had seen in July 2009. He was un-
responsive to known treatment modalities. We had started a
chemotherapy drug and discussed with the family that there
was no chance for living except ‘liver transplantation’. At this
point, a hypertension drug was given to the patient. After three
months the result was excellent. We reported this issue in the
most important journal of pediatric oncology. We had treated
the second child in the world in those days. After October 2009,
we began to treat selected patients who needed treatment with
haemangiomas with this new treatment modality. After than
we published our observation about the treatment of our first
16 cases. We published our results in national and international
meetings, and had an award. Until now, we treated about 550
patients in Ankara and Adana.
