STAGES OF HAEMANGIOMA
The most important haemangiomas are the ones beginning as cu-
taneous color changes and become swollen from the skin. These
congenital lesions which are absent or seen as a red-purplish col-
or change in the skin may grow up rapidly especially in the first
three months until one year of age. Increase of growth differs
between babies. Some of them remains unchanged but some may
reach to a huge size. They may be dangerous according to their
site or final size if it becomes a giant haemangioma.
These lesions which are absent at birth or seen as small spots
increasing in size slowly until one year of age, usually stops
their growth at 12-18 months of age. The decline begins at 18th
month and continues until 9 years of age. The lesions which did
not regress until this age, remains lifelong. Every year haemangi-
ma regress about 10% of their size. According to this, they will
regress 40% by 4; 50 % by 5, and 90% by 9 years of age.
The signs of regression of haemangioma are to turn into more
pale colors, a whitening on the lesion and decrease of the swol-
len tissue from the surface of the skin. Some of them vanishes
without a sign. Giant haemangiomas, infected ones and the ones
with hemorrage can leave skin tags or a scarring like a burned
tissue. These scars especially if present in the face may lead to
cosmetic faults which may need various surgical interventions.
The cosmetic problems may be so important that they can cause
several psychological problems in children.
