What is port wine stain,

is propranolol effective in this disease?

Port wine stains are the lesions in which blood ponds

under the skin and there are no nerve endings at the

lesions. Propranolol does not have effect in this type.

How long should be the

treatment period?

If treatment is started early (in the first 3 months) it

is about 6 months. Treatment period differs accord-

ing to the type of the haemangioma and the initia-

tion time of the therapy.

When is the appropriate

time to initiate treatment?

As soon as possible. The treatment can be start-

ed every time including prematures. The effect

of the drug decreases as the patient gets older.

After the age 2, it is usually ineffective.

Is the treatment effective over 1 year

of age in children and in adults?

It is ineffective in adults. Drug effect differs in 1 to 2 years of age

and it decreases over 2 years in children. Since the haemangioma

regresses after 18 months, the treatment has no effect on the

scarring or cosmetic outcome.

What are salmon stains

(angel kisses and stork bites)

and how are they treated?

Angel kisses are located on the forehead, and stork bites are

located at the back of the neck in the scalp. They are capil-

lary haemangiomas. Angel kisses heals spontaneously around

4 years of age. Stork bites become pale by time. Both of

them do not need treatment.

Do the haemangiomas which are swollen

from the skin surface need treatment?

They should be followed up. If they become swollen we treat them early

in order to avoid growth, bleeding, infection and cosmetic problems. We

use an ointment drug which resembles to propranolol locally on the lesion

before they become swollen.
