OTHER CONGENITAL VASCULAR LESIONS

DIFFERENT FROM INFANTILE HAEMANGIOMAS

Haemangiomas are diseases of arteries. There are some types which

treatment is not necessary or some types which are not responsive to

propranolol treatment. There two types of diseases involving the veins.

Port wine stains are the lesions in which there are no nerve endings at

the very small vessels. Some of types of vascular lesions may need sur-

gery. The lesions of white vessels are known as ‘lymphangiomas’. These

lesions were named as cystic hygromas when located at the neck region.

It was very difficult to give a diagnosis of haemangioma in a 9 days- old patient with

a huge vascular lesion at his ankle from the physical examination findings. MRI and

a biopsy was decided. MRI revealed the diagnosis of haemangioma so biopsy was omit-

ted. Treatment was started. First of all, the color was changed, became more pale, and

later the swelling got smaller. At the end of treatment, there was a soft fibrous-fat tissue

which was a remnant of huge vascular lesion. In the future this tissue should be

removed surgically for cosmetic purposes.
