THE PATIENT WHO DID NOT RESPOND

TREATMENT WITH PROPRANOLOL BEFORE

ADMISSION TO OUR INSTITUTION...

Triplet babies had all bronchiolitis. The drug commercially named ‘ventolin’ was of-

fered for bronchiolitis as bronchodilator. In the two babies, the drug showed effect

in bronchiolitis whereas in the baby with haemangioma bronchiolitis did not re-

solve. After onemonth of treatment with propranolol for haemangioma and vento-

lin for bronchiolitis, the treatment of haemangioma was considered as ineffective.

In this case, since these two drugs have opposite effects, they should not be giv-

en together as a principal. Both drugs were ineffective, ventolin in bronchiolitis,

propranolol in haemangioma. The more important thing was another treatment

with more side effects was recommended to the patient because the drug was

considered as ineffective.

The baby was 32 weeks premature and one of the triplet babies. She had no problem at birth. When she was 15 days-old,

there was a hyperemic lesion on the lateral side of her left eye. They admitted to a university hospital when she was two

months-old and offered oral steroids and two steroid injections to the lesion as well. The interesting point was the treatment

with propranolol was considered as ineffective after 40 days of treatment which had been used with the opposite drug, ventolin.

Propranolol treatment was started at our institution without ventolin. The treatment result was prominent at days 7and 14.

The eye was rescued. The tissue remnant after the huge haemangioma regression should need reconstruction later with

surgical intervention.
