OTHER PROBLEMS IN BIG FASCIAL

HAEMANGIOMAS

In some instances haemangiomas might have been a part of a disease of the

whole body. Sometimes the type, location and number of the haemangiomas

make us to think about these diseases. The most important one of these dia-

seases is called PHACE (s) syndrome in medicine. In this disease, besides the

haemangioma in the face, there are abnormal vascular lesions in the back part

of the brain, at the vessels going out of the heart and the vessels of the eye.

In this condition, propranolol only is effective in fascial haemangioma and

does not have effect in other lesions. It is important that the drug should be

given very carefully in this disease because of the abnormalities in the brain

vessels. If treatment is mandatory, early MR-angiography has no or limited

benefit. In every condition the treatment should be applied carefully.

He has hyperemia in his left part of face at birth. It became prominent by time. It was swollen from

the skin surface at the last 3 to 4 months before admission. There was bleeding from the back of his

ear. The doctors said that they could do nothing until he was 6 years-old. He was the most severe

case of all we had seen. We thought that there might be other components. Propranolol was started in a

small dose. He was hospitalized longer than other patients, the dose of the drug was increased gradual-

ly. The treatment response was great in this patient. After treatment a special MR (MRI-angiography) I

for the vessels of brain was performed. There were abnormal vessels on the left side of the brain.
